At Carosella & Associates, P.C., we understand that suffering from a disability and being unable to work can have a devastating impact on your physical, emotional and financial health. But there is hope–the Social Security Administration (SSA) provides benefits for individuals who cannot work due to a disabling physical or mental condition.
Types of Social Security Disability Benefits
The SSA provides two types of disability benefits, including:
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are for individuals with limited income who are disabled, blind or age 65 or older. Blind or disabled children may also be eligible for SSI.
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) pays benefits to individuals and certain family members if they have worked and paid Social Security taxes for a certain amount of time. Under both programs, you may also be eligible for SNAP benefits (food assistance), Medicaid and other benefits.
The SSA defines disability as the “inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months.”
This means that you must prove you are unable do the work you did before, are unable to perform a different type of work and your condition is expected to last a minimum of one year or result in death.
